I'm Loco for Coco
The Disney animated movie,
Coco
, makes me just “un poco loco” as the protagonist, Miguel, would say... or better yet... sing! Receiving and 8.4 out of 10 on IMDb is no easy feat, but
Coco
took critics’ breath away.
Following a young boy who desperately wants to sing, but is forbidden by his family,
Coco
emerses the audience in Hispanic culture, appropriately and impressively. His journey takes him into the afterlife, on the day of the dead, in search of his great, great grandfather who will help him back to the land of the living and help him convince his family to allow him to pursue his musical dreams.
Without spoiling anything,
Coco
is an awe-inspiring motion picture due to its intricate detail in animation and one of the best soundtracks to come from a movie in 2018. Nominated for 86 awards,
Coco
took home all but 19 of those. Two of these awards were Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the 90th Academy Awards. Available currently on Netflix,
Coco
should definitely be the next special feature on your movie night.
Touching more on the soundtrack, there are so many great songs that mix English and Spanish together. My personal favorites include “Un Poco Loco”, “Mi Corazon”, and of course, “Remember Me.” Not only do they make the movie more emotional, but also are songs that even standing on their own are great works.
Coco
will make you laugh and cry, but most importantly, want to pick up a guitar. It encourages children to pursue music, despite being scared or put down by others and emphasizes the importance of your “familia.” These lessons are hidden amidst the great plot, songs, and animation of this timeless movie.
