The SXSW Experience

April 6, 2018

Written by: Ann Vispo

Every year, thousands upon thousands of people flock to Austin, Texas to attend the globally renowned SXSW. This event features conferences, festivals, exhibitions, and networking in addition to a multitude of subcategories for each. SXSW provides a way for creative people from all over the world to showcase their talents and find opportunities.

This year, I participated in SXSW by volunteering on the outdoor stage crew at the music festival. The best perk I received for being a volunteer was getting a badge that gave me primary access to all music events and secondary access to every other SXSW. I worked backstage and got to see the artists up close and personal; keeping my composure was quite difficult if I’m being honest!

The list of artists that I was able to catch a glimpse of included Hinds, Cuco, Albert Hammond Jr., Mallrat, Post Animal, Shakey Graves, Baywaves, Varsity, Sports, Strawberry Runners, and Billie Eilish. Some of these artists are on top charts with a high spotify listener count, and others are local bands who some of my friends are in, providing a diverse assortment of shows to see. The highlight of my week at SXSW was meeting the drummer from Hinds, Amber. They were performing at Pearl St. Co-op and hung around after their show, giving me the opportunity to talk to them!

The badges, wristbands, and other passes can be a wee bit pricey, but worry not! There are so many unofficial showcases and other events that are free and open to the public. If you’re a music junkie like I am, hit up some West Campus Shows. Many artists perform at co-ops, bars, and other venues all around the Austin area. Even if you don’t purchase a pass, I would highly recommend swinging by Austin during SXSW to catch some free shows and get some free gear from showcasing companies! You are bound to find something spectacular to experience everyday.
