Homeshake Had Me Homeshook
Written by: Kate Phuah
Homeshake makes the kind of music that feels like a soft, warm hug. This past weekend I had the pleasure of seeing frontman, Peter Sagar, and the rest of his band play their funky melodies right in front of my very face.
The opening acts, Solace and Luna Luna, were also exceptionally delightful. I had never heard of either band before, but each band brought a lot of energy which made up for the cooled-down, slow vibe of Homeshake.
Solace had an incredible drummer and Luna Luna switched vocalists halfway through the set, which I also appreciated a lot. One of the Luna Luna singers, Danny, was my personal favorite. I wouldn’t say his vocals were exactly perfect, but his presence was super fun and he seemed very energetic and got the crowd moving, so props to him!
After about three hours of waiting and opening acts combined, Homeshake made his way out, sporting the neatest Sade t-shirt. This past summer in Austin, but couldn’t make it due to some ill-timed scheduling issues, so I was especially excited to finally see him live.
I really enjoyed all the songs he played, mostly sticking to the stuff off of his latest album,
Fresh Air
, though he opened with “She Can’t Leave Me Here Alone Tonight,” a sparkly number off of his first album,
In The Shower
. The band’s set up was modest, but effective. Sagar sounded exactly how he did on the recordings I have been nodding my head to for so long.
I was also feeling quite fortuitous that they played “Give It to Me,” the band’s most popular song, in the middle of the set- I just figured maybe he had grown tired of playing it over and over, as most artists do. In the song, there’s this huge kind of drop or break-down into chimey synths similar to the drop of a bass in a more EDM/electronic-type song, but much more mellow. I had seen on videos from past concerts that they prolong the wait for this drop- which is really satisfying in my opinion- so I was eager to see if they would do that at this show. Sure enough, the wait-and-drop was indeed played out and oh so brain melting! The man took a sip of his drink as he waited to cue the drop in the song… it was great.
I guess the drop in “Give It to Me” could sum up this concert. Very mellow, but extremely enjoyable. I highly recommend seeing Homeshake live sometime if you’re a little indie, Orange-Crush-Amp-Loving gal like me.
