I Love The Lemon Twigs and You Should Too

November 14, 2017

I make a different playlist for each month in order to recall/relate certain memories with the songs from that month’s playlist. One month I’ll be into Alex G and some other obscure, seemingly pretentious garage stuff. The next month could be middle school emo throwback- I just get tired of things very easily. Yet, somehow, The Lemon Twigs’ songs blend between all my monthly playlists. They're just so timeless and so freaking good. I remember the first time I heard their debut album, Do Hollywood. It sounded like rock and roll met circus calliope (in the best way possible). Brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario composed the 10-track album packed with punchy guitars and blitzy 70s keyboards.  Even with various inspirations like The Beatles and Todd Rundgren they still managed to make the songs sound like their own. Needless to say, I was pumped for the release of their 6-track EP, Brothers of Destruction, this past September. This album was a lot more theatrical than the first. It sounded humorous and sophisticated at the same time. The classic Lemon Twigs sound was still there, but the listener could definitely pick up of some evolution and growth from their first album. The biggest hit for me was the final track, “Light and Love.” This song is truly a masterpiece. It’s one of those song journeys where it starts off completely different than it ends (think the “Abbey Road” medley, but way shorter and mibus the reprise). “Light and Love” truly emulates both light and love by starting the song with a comforting hawaiian steel guitar and ukulele pairing, seamlessly transitioning to a harmonious guitar and steady, echoing drums....possibly bongos? The instrumentals are fantastic and dreamlike, but what really puts the icing on the cake for this track is the lyrics and melodies. Such lines as “you’re the vision of my future” and “I surrender, life is tender” make this song the most refreshing love ballad you’ll hear in modern music. It sounds like the feeling of a tight hug by a warm fire...does that make sense? A nostalgic, atmospheric piece to end the masterfully composed EP. If you haven’t done yourself the justice of experiencing these songs for yourself, do it now! There’s something for everyone, from upbeat, catchy tracks to soft ballads to dramatic stage music- I promise you, it is 18 minutes well spent! Photo Courtesy of NME.com Written by: Kate Phuah
