The Age of (Atlantis) Aquarius
If Woodstock was reborn in Texas, Atlantis Aquarius would HAVE to headline it. The band is groovy, psychedelic, and most likely a little bit magic. (I saw them in late August and was cold… explain that skeptics!!!) Atlantis Aquarius is one of the many projects to stem out of the Texas Gentlemen. Jordan Cain, a longtime Gent, is the leader of the band. The rest of the band is comprised of a core group of musicians, but it’s not uncommon to see different people in the band at different shows. Availability dictates the rest of the lineup, which jazzes each live show up a little bit. While the players come and go, the talent never does. Nibirian Sun, the band’s first EP and only released music so far, is like a rock and roll acid trip through Ancient Greece. It plays heavily into mystical concepts and fantasies but it’s grounded by solid instrumentation. It also has a touch of soul music, courtesy of Taylor Nicks’ tight harmonies and rich solos. As great as Atlantis Aquarius is on track, they’re even better live. Their sets include all 6 songs on the EP, plus more originals and some fantastic covers. Often, these songs call for harmonica solos. I am the world’s biggest advocate for a good solo on the old harmonica, so it made me really happy when I saw Jordan bust his out. At their shows, it’s impossible to stand still. Their loud, upbeat music gets people moving and grooving. I also love the live shows because they allow for improvisation. Nothing beats a long guitar solo that the musician makes up on the spot, and the slightly different lineups mean that I can hear a different solo every time. Because Atlantis Aquarius is a local band with roots in Dallas, their shows around DFW have a really special sense of community. Someone always knows them, and it’s really cool to get to see the band perform for loved ones. One of my favorite parts of their show at Gas Money was when Taylor gave a shoutout to her mom. I may be biased (I mean, my mom and I have matching tattoos), but I loved when she said "Y'all, give it up for my mom!" Being in that kind of close knit atmosphere at a show is always special. I sat down with Jordan a little over a month ago and got to ask him a few questions. I got kicked out of the venue shortly after (thanks 21+ rules), but I got to see the band a few weeks later.
